AFSC Sends Exploratory Mission to the Horn of Africa
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is sending an exploratory mission to the Horn of Africa, as part of its international peacebuilding strategy. The mission will assess the growing humanitarian crisis in Somalia as well as examine the geo-political roots of the crisis in the region which consist of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea as well.
Somalia in Brief

The situation in Somalia continues to detiorate for over two million people in the Horn of Africa. Cycles of violent conflict and humanitarian crises have plagued Somalia for over 30 years “While the memories of war are still strong amongst the population, we are witnessing another wave of deaths and displacement of civilians including women and children” says Dereje Wordofa, the AFSC Regional Director for Africa.

History of AFSC in Somalia
AFSC’s effort in the horn of Africa began in 1982 with a short-term relief program servicing refugees in war torn Somalia. From 1982-2001, a variety of programs followed that included relief assistance, support to orphans and rural community development.
